Before you start your journey, take a minute and review what makes Illinois a great place to work and play.

What makes Illinois real estate worthwhile?

In the past two centuries, Illinois has developed from an area of mostly unsettled wilderness into one of the nation’s most formidable agricultural and industrial powers. The bustling city of Chicago serves as the state’s economic and cultural center, and an elaborate network of rails, roads, and waterways makes Illinois a thoroughfare for much of the country’s commercial activity.

Agriculture is a key facet of the Illinois economy, but factories in Chicago, East Saint Louis, Peoria, and other industrial hubs employ more than 7 times as many people and generate about 15 times more income. Among the state’s most significant manufactured products are farm machinery and construction equipment, pharmaceuticals, and printed materials such as books and encyclopedias.

Industrial establishments in the region rely on electricity produced by an extensive nuclear power system. Illinois has more nuclear plants—13 in all—and generates more nuclear energy than any other state. Coal is another important source of energy. With the largest bituminous, or soft, coal beds in the country lying beneath its fertile plains, Illinois also ranks as one of the leading coal-producing states.

Agriculture, industry, and mining concerns are all served by a highly developed transportation network. The state is crisscrossed by 11 of the nation’s largest railroads, and the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes-to-Gulf-Waterway—two of the busiest waterways in the United States—carry Illinois goods to markets worldwide. The state’s widespread web of roads and highways is the most extensive in the Midwest, and O'Hare International Airport in Chicago handles more air traffic than any other airport in the world. Beyond its role as a commercial crossroads, Illinois is also a key junction for personal travel throughout the United States.
