What makes Indiana real estate worthwhile?
Not only is Indiana an important commercial crossroads in the midwestern United States, but its name also suggests the centrality of Native Americans to United States history. A profusion of Algonquian-speaking Native Americans living in the Northwest Territory prompted settlers to call the area Indiana in 1800, when the territory was divided into Ohio in the east and the Indiana Territory in the west. The state’s nickname, the Hoosier State, is widely known, but its origins are less clear. One theory holds that the nickname was derived from Sam Hoosier—he reputedly hired Native American laborers who became known as hoosiers. Another suggests that the name comes from the question "who’s here," asked by pioneers settling the area. Other theories also persist.
Major steel production facilities were established in northwestern Indiana in the early 20th century, solidifying the state’s industrial and manufacturing base. The city of Gary was planned and built by a major steel manufacturer in the early 1900s, and the surrounding Calumet region offered ample jobs for the incoming workforce. The emergence of automobile manufacturing operations, such as the Studebaker plant in South Bend, was followed by the inauguration of the Indianapolis 500 automobile race in 1911. Today the Indy 500 is one of the most popular annual sporting events in the United States.
In a period when many states are grappling with the problem of balancing the availability of natural resources with population expansion, Indiana is prosperous enough that the proper allocation of budget surpluses to educational and social services is one of the state’s vexing dilemmas. Manufacturing remains integral to the Indiana economy, employing about 33 percent of the state’s workers. Indiana is one of the nation’s leaders in the production of pharmaceutical drugs, agricultural chemicals, and primary metals. The smallest state west of the Appalachians and east of Hawaii, Indiana lies exceptionally close to the largest U.S. manufacturing markets and is crisscrossed by a number of major highways. So its state motto, the Crossroads of America, resonates across this deceptively small, and exceptionally prosperous, state.
