What makes Maine real estate worthwhile?
Covering over half of New England, the state of Maine is cut from its craggy coastline westward to its mountains into three narrow regions. The Atlantic Ocean crashes into inlets and outcrops, battering tiny islands that fragment the coast along the slender seaboard lowland region. The rocky stretch of Maine coast between New Hampshire and New Brunswick, Canada, is 367 kilometers (228 miles) long. But when the deeply indented shores of the many coastal islands and outcrops are included in this measurement, the total shoreline of state lands washed by the Atlantic amounts to 5,597 kilometers (3,478 miles). This is the longest shoreline of any state along the Atlantic coast.
Tourism has helped to sustain the economy of Maine, particularly along the scenic coast. The dramatic topography tells an equally dramatic geologic story. The juts and small, sharp islets emerged when an ice sheet retreated, allowing the land—and ocean waters—to rise. Thousands of hills and mountains lie along and off the coast, submerged in the risen water, and out of the ocean waters rises Cadillac Mountain on Mount Desert Island. Reaching 1,606 meters (1,530 feet) above sea level, Cadillac is the highest point along the Atlantic coast in the United States.
Two events bracket the recent history of Maine. In 1916 Sieur de Monts National Monument, which was later expanded into Acadia National Park, was established on Mount Desert and its surrounding islands. And in 1980 the United States awarded the Penobscot and the Passamaquoddy Native American groups U.S.$81.5 million as compensation for the theft of tribal land in the 18th and 19th centuries.
