Before you start your journey, take a minute and review what makes Maryland a great place to work and play.

What makes Maryland real estate worthwhile?

From the lush dairy farms that dot the northern countryside to the crab boats and seagulls that ply the whitecaps of Chesapeake Bay, the scenery of Maryland is as colorful as its history. Topographically, Maryland divides neatly into three main regions: the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the Piedmont Plateau, and the Appalachian Mountains. The expansive blue waters of the Chesapeake Bay divide the Atlantic Coastal Plain into the flat, marshy land of the Eastern Shore and the gently rolling expanse of the Western Shore.

Around 1630, when Europeans first began to settle in what is now Maryland, most of the Native Americans they encountered were of the Algonquian family, who had lived in the area for thousands of years. The names of many towns and rivers in Maryland reflect the heritage of these indigenous peoples, even though most of them quickly withdrew from the region in the face of expanding colonization. Early European settlement was motivated by a quest for religious tolerance and marked by competition between rival English factions for control of the region. As the colony flourished and its population rapidly increased, a border dispute arose with neighboring Pennsylvania. A survey completed in 1767 settled the issue and established the Mason-Dixon Line, which divided the free states and the slave states during the U.S. Civil War.

Maryland was one of the original 13 colonies to sign the Declaration of Independence, and in 1783 the American Revolution officially ended in Annapolis, when the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris. The bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to pen "The Star-Spangled Banner," which became the country’s national anthem. During the Civil War, Maryland was nearly as divided as the nation itself. Although the state officially remained loyal to the Union, its reliance on slave labor moved many Marylanders to join the cause of the Confederacy. One of the war’s bloodiest days transpired within the borders of Maryland, at the Battle of Antietam. Today the Antietam National Battlefield, Fort McHenry, and other historical sites retell the storied heritage of Maryland.
