What makes Massachusetts real estate worthwhile?
Massachusetts, looking squeezed by New York to the west, Vermont and New Hampshire to the north, and Connecticut and Rhode Island to the south, opens to a scenic, extended coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. Five natural land regions vertically divide the slender Massachusetts, the sixth smallest state. The narrow Taconic Range, averaging about 600 meters (about 2,000 feet) in elevation, line the state’s western border with New York. This chain includes Mount Greylock, which reaches the highest point in Massachusetts, at 1,065 meters (3,495 feet) above sea level. West of the Taconic Range, the Berkshire Valley slopes up into the Berkshire Hills. The Berkshire Hills—on average, about the same elevation as the Taconic Range—extend north into the Green Mountains of Vermont.
Immigration to Massachusetts from countries such as Ireland, Italy, and Poland swelled the state’s population in the middle of the 19th century. After the U.S. Civil War many of these immigrants found jobs working in burgeoning industries around Boston, New Bedford, and Worcester. Massachusetts workers produced and shipped textiles and leather items, as well as ships and other durable goods—especially as the demand for ships and other wartime supplies increased during World War I and II. By 1920 the population of Massachusetts had grown to nearly 4 million, and about 65 percent of these residents were either immigrants or the children of immigrants.
The state’s manufacturing base was boosted in the 1980s by substantial defense industry-related federal spending in Massachusetts. But in the 1990s government cutbacks in defense spending and costly environmental cleanups have been exacerbated by an economic recession. A thriving service industry, strengthened by income from the state’s many tourist attractions, has moved to the forefront of the economy. Cape Cod boasts some of the most popular destinations for visitors, such as Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island. Another attraction is Walden Pond, a rural eastern lake where Henry David Thoreau lived and wrote during the 1840s. The juxtaposition of Walden Pond, which Thoreau praised as a place where humans and nature could commune peacefully, with the manufacturing centers, diminutive mountains, and bustling coast of Massachusetts illustrate the historic and geographic breadth of this state.
