What makes Minnesota real estate worthwhile?

It is virtually impossible to precisely enumerate the more than 20,000 lakes that punctuate Minnesota. With channels connecting many lakes, and huge disparities in size between the smallest and largest, these lakes were formed by glaciers that covered most of the state’s area at various times over several millenia. Moving across the state to the south and west, glaciers along the Western Great Lakes Lowland not only produced a lasting layer of fertile topsoil but also scraped lake beds and then filled them with meltwater. Lake Agassiz, a massive glacial lake that extended across northwestern Minnesota after the last glaciers melted between 9,000 and 10,000 years ago, dug the Red River valley in the western part of the state, where the lake’s waters drained through the Minnesota River.

Although its agricultural output is high, Minnesota has a mostly urban population. Saint Paul and Minneapolis sit astride the Mississippi and claim more than half the state’s citizens. Duluth, to the north, is one of the busiest ports in the United States and the farthest west of any port along the Great Lakes.

Most visitors to Minnesota are attracted not only to its cities and picturesque expanses of water, but also to its national monuments and parks, which pay homage to various facets of the state’s history. Voyageurs National Park and Grand Portage National Monument, on the northwest shores of Lake Superior, commemorate the route along which French Canadian traders plied the waters from Montréal to northwest Canada, bringing supplies to exchange for furs. Pipestone National Monument, in southwest Minnesota, marks the site where Native Americans from across North America met to excavate a hard, red stone for peace pipes and recalls a much earlier historical period when the resources of Minnesota were pivotal for North America.
