What makes Missouri real estate worthwhile?
Gently rolling hills, river gorges, and glacial plains contribute to the varied landscape of Missouri. The greatest relief is found in the forested Ozark Plateau of southern Missouri, an area of scenic mountain wilderness. Clear, swift-moving streams have sculpted the soft limestone of the plateau, leaving deep chasms and extensive underground caverns bubbling with natural springs. The Missouri River, the longest river in the United States, runs east through the middle of the state to join the Mississippi River north of Saint Louis. The Mississippi traces the eastern edge of the state, forming the borders with Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee along its southerly course. A slice of silty, low-lying land in the southeast corner of Missouri makes up part of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. The fertile, rolling hills of the Dissected Till Plains lie north of the Missouri River. Ice Age glaciers deposited a deep layer of sediment over this region, and streams slowly eroded the surface to form low hills. The generally flat, moderately fertile Osage Plains are punctuated by low hills, covering a wedge-shaped section of west central Missouri.
In recent decades, manufacturing and the service industries have eclipsed agriculture as the most important sectors of the economy. Factories concentrated in Saint Louis and Kansas City produce a wide array of goods, including aircraft, automobiles, chemicals, and trucks. Livestock products such as cattle, hogs, and turkeys yield about half of the state’s farm income. The balance comes from corn, sorghum, soybeans, and other cultivated crops, as well as the production of lumber. Mining, particularly lead production, has long been an important source of jobs. In addition to lead, the state’s mines extract limestone near the Mississippi River, and coal in the northeast.
The many cultural, historic, and natural attractions of Missouri entice millions of tourists every year. Music lovers stream to the nearly three dozen music halls in Branson to enjoy country music performed by top artists. Campers, hunters, cyclists, and other nature enthusiasts flock to the lakes and rugged woods of the Mark Twain National Forest in southeast Missouri, the only national forest in the state. One of the most famous landmarks in Missouri, the soaring stainless steel Gateway Arch in Saint Louis, has symbolized the state’s motto, Gateway to the West, since its completion in 1965.
