What makes New Hampshire real estate worthwhile?
The rugged mountains, clear lakes, and verdant countryside of New Hampshire offer year-round recreational opportunities, drawing millions of visitors to the state each year. Skiers and hikers relish the challenging slopes and scenic beauty of the White Mountains, which cover the northern third of the state. This rough landscape is defined by dense forests and granite peaks cut deeply by glacial gorges known as notches. Mount Washington, part of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, is the highest peak in all of New England, at 1,917 meters (6,288 feet) above sea level. In 1934 the wind raged over this summit at 372 kilometers per hour (231 miles per hour)—one of the highest wind speeds ever recorded.
New Hampshire was at the forefront of the American Revolution, although it was the only colony in which no battles took place. In 1775 New Hampshire Minutemen rushed to the aid of fellow rebels in Boston after fighting broke out at Lexington and Concord. The following year, New Hampshire led the way to independence by becoming the first colony to adopt its own constitution. In 1778 the state ratified the Constitution of the United States, supplying the last votes necessary to put the landmark document into effect.
The state has commanded the political spotlight in more recent times as well. Because New Hampshire has long held the country’s earliest presidential primary, its citizens wield considerable influence over the course of national politics. In addition, the tiny hamlet of Dixville Notch, tucked into the uppermost reaches of the White Mountains, is traditionally the first town in the nation to report presidential election results.
