Relocating to New Jersey?

Before you start your journey, take a minute and review what makes New Jersey a great place to work and play.

What makes New Jersey real estate worthwhile?

Being situated in the midst of major commercial and population centers has been something of a mixed blessing for New Jersey. On the one hand, its proximity to major economic hubs such as New York City and Philadelphia has helped establish New Jersey—among the most urbanized and densely populated of all states—as a focal point of industry and transportation. But such a strategic placement has not always been an advantage. During the American Revolution, New Jersey was the scene of nearly 100 battles between British and Colonial troops, and came to be called the Cockpit of the Revolution.

A number of important research facilities, such as the Institute for Advanced Study and AT&T Bell Laboratories, are based in New Jersey. It seems fitting that the state should be a modern center for technology and invention because it was also home at one time or another to three great scientific minds: Thomas Edison, Samuel Morse, and Albert Einstein. Edison’s home and laboratories constitute the Edison National Historic Site, one of the state’s most visited attractions.

Other vacationers in New Jersey head for the boardwalk and casinos of Atlantic City or for other resorts such as Asbury Park, Cape May, and the Wildwoods. With 209 kilometers (130 miles) of Atlantic coastline, New Jersey is one of the most popular seaside vacation spots in the nation. More than 50 resort areas lie along the coastal waters of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, one of the four main land regions of New Jersey. Much of this plain, which spreads across the southern three-fifths of the state, consists of fertile, rolling lowlands fringed by salty marshlands and lush meadows along the coast.

A slender belt of the heavily industrialized Piedmont Plateau runs north of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, giving way in the west and north to the hard, stony ridges and shimmering lakes of the New England Upland, also known as the New Jersey Highlands. Lining the state’s northwest boundary are the sandstone ridges of the Kittatinny Mountains. The Delaware River courses in and around these mountains, gracefully carving a 3-kilometer (2-mile) gorge called the Delaware Water Gap—widely regarded as one of the most scenic areas in the eastern United States.
