Before you start your journey, take a minute and review what makes North Dakota a great place to work and play.
What makes North Dakota real estate worthwhile?
Despite the long, harsh winters and short, hot summers of North Dakota, agriculture retains a central role in the state’s economy. The fertile black soil of the eastern plains, which is included in the Western Great Lakes Lowland region, produces a number of huge crops including spring wheat, barley, and sunflowers.
The people known as Mound Builders first settled along the state’s riverbanks in about the year 1500, and the Mandan and Sioux later made their home here. The area was explored by the French in the mid-1700s and by the Lewis and Clark Expedition about a century later, but there was little settlement until the 1850s, when the arrival of the railroad and the Homestead Act brought an influx of pioneers and farmers.
Although its area is large, North Dakota is one of the least populous states in the United States. According to the 1990 census, North Dakota had about 638,244 (1998 estimate) inhabitants—fewer than the state had in 1920. The capital of North Dakota is Bismarck, and other main cities are Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot. Historic landmarks in North Dakota include several 19th-century military forts, Sitting Bull’s grave, and Writing Rock Park.
