What makes Ohio real estate worthwhile?
Near Hillsboro, Ohio, an impressive earthen formation called the Great Serpent Mound curves along a ridge for more than 400 meters (more than 1,300 feet). Northwest of Hillsboro, near the Scioto River, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park preserves 23 burial mounds created hundreds of years ago by the Hopewell, some of the first inhabitants of Ohio. From about 100 BC until AD 500 Hopewell, Adena, and other prehistoric Native American groups known as Mound Builders hunted and fished throughout the Ohio region, sculpting ceremonial mounds from the earth.
Today Ohio is one of the nation’s leading industrial states. Factories in Ohio account for about one-fourth of the gross state product and provide jobs for more than a million workers. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus are the most significant of the state’s many manufacturing hubs. The chief products fabricated in Ohio include motor vehicles, farm machinery, and various metal, rubber, and plastic goods. Giant mills such as those in Canton and Lorain turn out more steel than those of any other state except Indiana.
Ohio is also one of the country’s leaders in the extraction of coal, clay, limestone, and gravel. The state’s mines provide about one-third of all building sandstone used nationwide. Agriculture continues to play an important role in the economy, and the corn and soybean crops of Ohio are among the largest in the nation. Sheep, milk, and greenhouse items also contribute to the state’s farm income.
Farms are scattered throughout the state, but agricultural activity is concentrated in the rich soils of the Till Plains, which cover much of western Ohio. The broad river valleys of these rolling plains are traversed by a series of moraines running from east to west. A belt of flat lowlands known as the Lake Plain stretches across northern Ohio, narrowing to only 8 to 16 kilometers (5 to 10 miles) along the edge of Lake Erie. Parts of this region—one of the busiest commercial areas in the United States—are poorly drained and peppered with swamps and marshes.
Eastern Ohio is split into two distinct sections of the Appalachian Plateau. Glacial activity in the northern third has smoothed the rolling terrain somewhat. South of this glaciated area, steep-sided hills, stony ridges, and hardwood forests define the landscape of one of the most scenic and rugged areas of the state.
