What makes Oregon real estate worthwhile?

Battered cliffs line much of the Oregon coastline, rising up to 300 meters (up to 1,000 feet) before rolling into the Coast and Klamath mountain ranges that blanket the coastal interior. Moving inland, the alluvial plain of the Willamette Valley, with its thick forests and fertile farmlands, nestles between the northern coastal peaks and the Cascade Range, a brawny swath of crests that run down the state’s midsection. The Cascades include a number of dormant volcanoes, among them Mount McLoughlin, the Three Sisters, and Mount Hood, which, at 3,426 meters (11,239 feet), is the highest point in Oregon.

Ever since the first pioneers developed a logging industry in the state’s heavily wooded western mountains, Oregon has had a resource-oriented economy focused on its forests and farms. Wood processing dominates the manufacturing sector—Oregon holds about a tenth of the nation’s timber and leads all other states in lumber production. Although the forest industry is concentrated in the Cascade Range, extensive tracts of ponderosa pine in the east and Douglas fir throughout the west have spurred logging operations in almost every county of the state. Agriculture also figures prominently in the economy. Livestock, wheat, and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables from the lush Willamette Valley are the major farm products.

Oregonians braved tough economic times in the early 1980s, when a deep slump in wood-related industries translated into sawmill closures and lost jobs. By the 1990s, even as an increasingly diversified economy was well into recovery, champions of industry and the environment remained at odds over the proper balance of exploitation versus conservation for the state’s invaluable forestlands.
