Before you start your journey, take a minute and review what makes Tennessee a great place to work and play.

What makes Tennessee real estate worthwhile?

In some ways Tennessee seems more like three states than one. Pronounced regional distinctions in culture, economy, and topography are reflected in the state’s three officially recognized divisions of east, middle, and west Tennessee. Each region has made unique contributions to Tennessee history, and each retains its own particular character and appearance.

Much of Tennessee lay in ruin following the Civil War, and it was ruled by a Reconstruction-era government controlled by Union sympathizers known as Radicals. Under Radical Reconstruction, former slaves were elected to political office and had legal rights as citizens for the first time in United States history. The Reconstruction-era government also built thousands of schools and hospitals throughout the former Confederate states. Tennessee and other southern states initially accepted some facets of Reconstruction, but in these states a white backlash to African American citizenship was quick to foment.

It took almost 40 years for agriculture in Tennessee to regain pre-war levels of production, but jobs created by a gradual expansion of the state’s industrial base helped to relieve the poverty that plagued many areas. The Tennessee Valley Authority injected new life into the economy during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Since that time, this massive, federally funded integration of energy, conservation, and education projects has played a crucial role in the development of modern Tennessee, which proudly celebrated its bicentennial in 1996.
