What makes Vermont real estate worthwhile?
Vermont’s name, derived from the French words vert, which means “green,” and mont, or “mountain,” is a good descriptor for the forested hills and peaks that define the state’s topography. The high, rugged wilderness of the granite White Mountains in northeast Vermont gives way to the New England Upland in the eastern part of the state, where fast-flowing streams carve deep canyons through the hilly landscape. The Green Mountains run north to south through central Vermont, while the Taconic Range dominate the southwest corner of the state. In the northwest, sedimentary rock forms the foundation of a relatively flat region known as the Champlain Valley region, known for its fruit orchards and dairy farms. The highest point in the state is Mount Mansfield, which rises 1,339 meters (4,393 feet) in the northern Green Mountains.
The variety of mountains and long, snowy winters of Vermont make the state popular with skiers, who enjoy the state’s many winter resorts. Tourism, bolstered by the spectacular autumn foliage of Vermont’s deciduous trees and the many opportunities for summer hiking and mountain biking, is a mainstay for the state’s economy. Traditionally important industries such as textiles and railroad equipment have been gradually replaced by printing and marble and granite quarrying. Agricultural products from Vermont include maple syrup and dairy goods. Particularly well known is the rich ice cream made by Ben & Jerry’s, whose labels depict the spotted black and white cows that graze in the Vermont countryside.
The state capital is Montpelier, in north central Vermont. Much of the state retains a rural character, and the folk culture is well preserved. The largest city, Burlington, sits on the shore of Lake Champlain. The lake forms much of the western border with New York and receives the waters of most of Vermont’s rivers.
