What makes Virginia real estate worthwhile?
Coastal marshes, rolling plains, and sweeping valleys cover the historic countryside of Virginia. The landscape can be divided into three natural regions. The Coastal Plain extends from the sandbars and tidelands fringing the Atlantic shore to the center of the state, where it meets the Piedmont Plateau, part of the rugged Appalachian regions that cover the western half of the state. Many rivers and streams crisscross the rolling plains of the Piedmont as they run southeast, cascading down low waterfalls onto the Coastal Plain over what is known as the Fall Line. The western edge of the Piedmont abuts the Blue Ridge Mountains, which separate the plains from the lower Appalachian elevations. The many ridges, river valleys, and plateaus of the Appalachian Mountains blanket the western edge of Virginia.
Today the government provides more jobs than any other employer in Virginia. The state is home to numerous federal facilities—including the Pentagon and the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency—and thousands of government workers live in the bedroom suburbs in the north eastern counties bordering Washington, D.C.. Shipyards, automobile parts factories, and truck assembly plants also make significant contributions to the economy. The state's farmers raise livestock—especially chickens—and grow apples, peaches, soybeans, and vegetables. New strains of tobacco introduced by farmers have helped it remain a major crop. Miners still extract coal in western Virginia, but growth in other parts of the economy has far outstripped the mining sector.
The varied landscape and historical significance of Virginia draw thousands of tourists every year. The many Civil War battlefields and monuments are some of the most frequently visited sites, and the carefully restored colonial buildings in Williamsburg attract visitors with an interest in early U.S. history. Hiking trails and scenic drives are the main draws of Shenandoah National Park in the Appalachians—particularly in autumn, when the foliage turns a range of vivid hues. As the population of Virginia has grown, concerns over the state's urban areas and the suburban consolidation of prosperous development have mounted. Public concern in recent years has also centered on the sustainability of the state's unique environmental areas, such as Chesapeake Bay, as Virginia experiences continued economic growth.
