The Boeing Company has been a mainstay of the Washington economy since World War II. This aerospace giant builds more commercial jetliners than any other company in the world. The state also ranks as a leading center of shipbuilding, with major shipyards at Bremerton, Seattle, and Tacoma.

Washington farms turn out a wide array of grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. The state is famous for its apples, which account for almost one-quarter of all crop income. Washington also leads the nation in commodities such as hops, sweet cherries, and peas. Grapes grown in eastern Washington produce world-class wines, and the colorful fields around Puget Sound yield large quantities of tulip, iris, and daffodil bulbs.

Timber remains another staple of the state economy. The forest industry employs more than 50,000 people, and only Oregon produces more lumber. Although the fiscal impact of fishing is modest, Washington chinook and sockeye salmon are renowned for their quality. A number of Native Americans in the region depend upon the healthy salmon runs for their livelihood.
