General Information
Alta is a small mountain community nestled at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon in the far eastern part of Salt Lake County. A wide variety of terrain and spectacular alpine scenery combine to create a unique setting for diverse outdoor experiences. In the winter the town is a world-renowned ski area with an average snowfall of over 500 inches of light, dry snow, located 30 minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport.
In the summer it is a beautiful alpine environment frequented by hikers, mountain bikers and sightseers.
Origin of City's Name
Though alta is a Spanish word meaning "upper or higher," the actual origin of the name has remained unclear.
Did You Know?
In the late 1930s Alta began its life outsied of mining. With Sun Valley, Idaho, as a model, a group of interested businessmen and skiers organized the Salt Lake City Winter Sports Association, which negotiated with the U.S. Forest Service and raised $10,000 for construction of a ski lift at Alta.
