General Information

Copperton is a small community located at the mouth of Bingham Canyon and is approximately 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.

The rush for riches in Bingham Canyon began as people from throughout the wold came in search of valuable minerals. The small mining claims of individual miners were bought by large mining companies. The largest of these was the Utah Copper Company, which began open-pit mining operations in 1906. The formation of these operations created the need for many jobs.

The continued flood of immigrations in the early 1900's and the limited living space within Bingham’s narrow canyon walls created a housing shortage in the area. The land located at the mouth of Bingham Canyon was chosen for a new company sponsored township. The site was chosen because the land was already owned by Utah Copper Company.

Origin of City's Name

Utah Copper Company created copperton for its workers and thus chose a name to reflect its origin. Homes were built with copper fixtures, shingles, plumbing and wiring from the mine.

Did You Know?

In the 1950's, company owned homes were sold to their occupants. This change had is origin when Utah Copper Company was taken over by the Kennecott Copper Corporation.
