General Information
Santaquin is a small, agricultural-based town in southern Utah County near the Juab County border. In December of 2000, the city council approved a 2,270 acre annexation, which nearly doubled the size of the community. The new development in this annexation will include a high-tech industrial park, a pair of golf courses, a major golf club and clubhouse, and a residential area.
Santaquin is a fast-growing community. From 1998 to 2000, it gained nearly 2,000 new residents. With a median age of 22.9 and an average household size of 3.63, Santaquin households are younger and slightly larger than most of the county's.
Origin of City's Name
Originally called Summit City because it lies on a summit between Juab and Utah counties, the name was changed to Santaquin in 1856 to honor the Sanpitch Indian chief who later became a farmer and cattle ranger in the area.
Did You Know?
Black Hawk, leader of the Ute Indian tribe during the Black Hawk War of the 1860s, died at Spring Lake near Santaquin in 1870 and was buried in the foothills near the city. For many years Utah's Ute Indians have held their annual celebration at Santaquin's city park.
The city is also the center of the state's sour cherry and apple industries. The city is surrounded by several fruit packing plants.
